The Role of Culture in the Formation of Vernacular Houses in the Talesh Region

Abstract

The subject of this study is to investigate the role of culture in the formation of vernacular houses Talesh, which is an important issue since the architecture of this region has not been studied enough. The purpose of this research is to understand how the content elements of the region’s culture influence the physical form and spatial organization of these houses; and the main question is that what was the role of cultural factors in formation of houses? This qualitative research is descriptive and analytical. The data for research collected both in the field and from the available documents. The independent variable of the study is culture and the dependent variable is the architecture of vernacular houses. The statistical population of the research is Talesh and the sampling method is quota sampling. The research results show that space occupancy varies according to seasonal changes; in cold seasons the main room and in Nowruz the porch space are occupied, and during the summer household members move to upper floors or outdoor. Some elements such as the area of building and service spaces, decorations, etc. classify the houses according to social classes, also the spatial elements of these houses can be divided into three groups including fixed, semi-fixed and moving elements.
