Purpose- Iranian Bakhtiari folk songs play a vital role in preserving cultural identity and strengthening social cohesion among the people of this tribe. The present study aims to explore the manifestations of the sublime and the beautiful in Bakhtiari songs and is based on Edmund Burke's (1757/2008) aesthetic theory. Focusing on the works of Masoud Bakhtiari (Bahman Alaeddin) as one of the most prominent figures of Bakhtiari folk music, this study seeks to answer the fundamental question of how Bakhtiari songs are represented in the cultural and linguistic context of this tribe and what is the relationship between this representation and the lived experience of the tribal society as well as the fundamental concepts of Burke's aesthetics?
Methodology- This study, with a qualitative approach and content analysis, analyzed 15 songs from Masoud Bakhtiari's albums based on Burke's theory components that define the sublime with elements such as pleasurable fear, ambiguity, grandeur, power, and infinity; And the beautiful is formulated with the characteristics of tenderness, proportion, elegance and coherence; it has been written. The method of selecting the songs was based on the criteria of popularity, thematic richness and their lasting presence in the collective memory of the people of the Bakhtiari community as well as the field observations of the authors.
Findings- The research conducted showed that in Bakhtiari songs, through the connection with the mountainous geography of the Zagros and the nomadic culture, the sublime experience is recreated mainly in the form of themes of death, separation, the grandeur of the mountains and the glory of tribal love, and in contrast, the manifestations of the beautiful have found meaning in describing the delicate nature, the earthly beloved, romantic rituals and the subtleties of everyday life. This reveals a complex dialectic that exists in these songs between sublimity and suffering and beauty and love; A dialectic that not only reflects the dualistic structure of the culture of these people as part of Iranian culture, but also creates a unique aesthetic experience in which pleasure is born from suffering, and sublimity from the text of beauty.
Conclusions- The results of this study, while validating the application of Edmund Burke's theory in the context of Iranian culture, show that Bakhtiari songs go beyond local expression and, through a dynamic interaction of the sublime and the beautiful, show that Iranian local songs have the capacity to be considered as multilayered and universal texts in interdisciplinary studies of aesthetics, cultural anthropology, and comparative literature
