The ritual of cooking “Ash of the Thirteenth of Safar,” accompanied by dough figurines, is one of the ancient and gradually fading traditions of the people of Naqneh in Borujen County, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. It is performed to ward off misfortune and the inauspiciousness associated with this day. The aim of this study is to explore the meaning and symbolic function of this ritual—comprising the cooking of ash (a traditional thick soup) and the making of dough figurines as apotropaic objects—within the folk culture of Naqneh. It seeks to demonstrate how this custom, as an integrated system of meaning, reproduces beliefs related to averting misfortune, dispelling inauspiciousness, and fostering social cohesion. During the study, the question is raised as to what connection exists between cooking ash reshteh (noodle soup) and crafting dough figurines. The research population includes ritual noodle soups and dough figurines in Iran, from which the Ash of the Thirteenth of Safar in Naqneh and the two dough figurines (male and female) placed within it were purposefully selected and qualitatively described and analyzed. The findings, based on fieldwork and documentary research, indicate that the “Ash of the Thirteenth of Safar” ritual in Naqneh is a prominent example of Iranian food-symbolic rites that simultaneously serve religious, symbolic, and social functions. The dough figurines act to repel misfortune and illness; the participation of young girls and the release of the figurines into water symbolize purity and fertility; and the collective gathering to cook and distribute the ash reinforces social solidarity. This ritual goes beyond being merely a ceremonial dish and reveals the interaction between religion, culture, and society. Documenting it is essential for preserving intangible cultural heritage and for understanding how communities confront inauspiciousness and social crises.Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.
